10 Spring Safety Tips

Apr 22, 2021

Spring is here and the mad rush to get crops planted to start a successful season has begun. With that being said, there is one thing that is more important, and that is safety. These 10 safety tips will help you have a safe, successful spring.
  1. Buckle up: 40% of farm injuries are tractor related, with the primary cause being rollovers. Most know that wearing a seatbelt in a vehicle is important, but it is just as important in a tractor. 99% of rollover fatalities could have been prevented by wearing a seatbelt.
  2. Use safety lights and markings: Make sure slow-moving vehicle signs are bright and visible and check that caution lights are working and visible from at least 1000 feet. This distance gives drivers traveling at 50-60mph the opportunity to slow down or stop.
  3. Lock it out: When working with any machinery or any equipment with moving parts, including hydraulics. Make sure everything is locked securely before traveling or driving on roadways.
  4. Hydraulics: Secure pieces that rely on hydraulics with a second support system while working on equipment or preforming maintenance.
  5. Tune-up and double check: Make sure all equipment is functioning properly and that all guards and protective pieces are secured properly before using any piece of equipment.
  6. Educate: Talk with everyone helping on your farm about safety, and make sure everyone is using the proper equipment and all available safety features.
  7. Protection: Make sure all safety equipment like gloves, safety glasses, goggles and ear protection are not damaged and is working the way it should.
  8. Roadways: Watch for vehicles when entering or exiting fields and be clear with which direction you intend to go.
  9. Takes breaks and get rest: This is easier said then done with so much to do in such a short time, but it is important to stay alert and avoid slow reaction time as a result of exhaustion.
  10. Safety kit: Keep everything from a first aid kit to towels and water in the tractor, shop and truck.
From everyone at Centra Sota, we hope you have a safe and successful spring!
