How to Keep Furnace Vents Clear of Snow and Ice Build Up

It looks like we are finally getting out of a stretch of frigid weather. That means it is time to inspect the furnace pipe vent on the outside of your house. It’s usually a white plastic pipe that comes out of the side of a house. If you find a thin layer of frost on the pipe, you can scrape it off with a plastic putty knife. Next, use a flashlight to look into the pipe vent to see whether there’s any buildup on the inside. It is also important to move snow that is around the vent.
If air cannot vent through this pipe properly your furnace will shut off as a safety precaution. This serves a protection from carbon monoxide.
Stay safe and stay warm!
