Dear Editor,
Agriculture is an industry built to withstand challenges, but today’s operating environment feels a little more intense and a little less cyclical. But as the CEO of Centra Sota Cooperative in Buffalo, Minnesota, I’ve seen firsthand how the cooperative model helps farmers and rural communities succeed in good times and bad. During National Cooperative Month, I’m reflecting on the value cooperatives bring to communities across Minnesota and why they remain essential to agriculture’s future.
For generations, cooperatives have helped farmers navigate uncertainty, access new opportunities and strengthen local economies. Here in Minnesota, cooperatives help farmers access markets, adopt new technologies, create jobs, and keep rural communities strong.
At a time when farmers are wondering whether this year’s harvest will turn a profit, cooperatives are designed to provide innovation and opportunity by combining local knowledge with the strength and resources of a larger network.
For Centra Sota Cooperative and the farmers and communities we serve, the cooperative model creates long-term value that extends beyond the farm gate. Because cooperatives are owned by their members, profits are reinvested into farming operations, local businesses, and rural communities rather than distributed to outside investors.
As we celebrate National Cooperative Month, I want to thank the farmers, employees, and community members who make cooperatives so special. I have no doubt we will continue working together to strengthen agriculture, empower producers, and help ensure rural America remains strong for future generations.
Cooperatives were founded on the belief that people can accomplish more together than they can alone. That spirit of cooperation remains one of agriculture’s greatest strengths and an important foundation for the future of communities across America.
Sincerely,
Jeff Johnson
