What is "Premium" Diesel?

Fuel for Thought: What makes premium diesel different from standard?
Fuel for Thought: What makes premium diesel different from standard?

Did you know Centra Sota is the #1 Cenex Premium Diesel supplier in Minnesota? If you thought that diesel is just diesel, we're excited to teach you a little bit about what makes premium diesel different.

Not all diesel is the same. At Centra Sota, we believe in offering a premium product because we want our customers to have the best products to drive them toward success.

So, how is premium diesel different than regular diesel?

If you a simple web search, you’ll see that premium diesel is often defined as any diesel with an additive. Meaning that as soon as anything is added, it can be called “premium diesel.” This seems off. Coffee energizes us when we add it to our morning, but adding coffee to diesel doesn’t magically make it “Premium Diesel.” Unfortunately, premium diesel on the open market is not regulated the way gasoline is. The base diesel product is regulated, but after that, it’s up to the supplier.

We only sell premium fuel that actually benefits the customer. Those benefits include:

  • Detergency Package – Keeps engines running cleaner, longer, with an aggressive detergency formula that delivers optimal performance and efficient combustion.

  • Water Management – Improves engine performance with a complete water management system for longer equipment life.

  • Injection and Combustion Optimization – Addresses fuel oxidation problems in new engine technologies, improving power and fuel efficiency with a more complete burn.

  • Storage Stability – Extends storage life months beyond typical #2 diesel, protects equipment from contaminants, and offers exceptional filterability and biostability.

  • Corrosion Protection – Guards fuel lines against rust and corrosion.

  • Improved Lubricity – Protects moving parts from excessive wear and failure.

  • Cetane Improver – Enhances ignition quality for quicker, smoother starts.

There’s much more to this topic, and over time, we’ll dive deeper into each benefit and explain why each is important. For now, the key takeaway is simple: there’s a big difference between regular diesel and premium diesel.
